Taking an LGV driving test - make sure you know the rules

New rules have come into place to effect the EU directive on the initial qualification and periodic training of drivers of certain goods vehicles. The new rules that came into force in April2010 make it easier for driver training agencies to help students with applications for their tests.

The new regulations allow those firms that provide training for the  theory and practical test to apply for test appointments for their students.  However, those sitting the test must be aware that the examiner can refuse to continue with the test if the vehicle provided  does not meet specified minimum requirements for the conduct of the test or is not the same sort of vehicle in respect of which the student undertook the theory part of the test.  Students need to make sure that their training provider has given details of the candidate within the specified period of not later than 4pm on the day before a clear working day  before the date of the appointment for the test and need to make sure that they take with them the required evidence of their identity.   The details that need to be submitted in advance are the name of the candidate, the type of licence that they hold, the nature of the test and details of the vehicle on which the test is to be taken.  Students should note that should they fail either the theory or practical test, then they cannot retake the test for at least three further working days.
