How secure is your load?

The DVSA has published a revised version of its guide “Load securing: vehicle operator guidance”. Over 2000 prohibition notices are issued each year to vehicles with insecure loads. The cost to the industry includes not only the costs of fixed penalty notices and fines but also downtime in having to re-position and re-secure the load. Getting it right first time, not only saves money, but could in some cases save lives.
Section 40A of the Road Traffic Act 1988 states that a person is guilty of an offence if he either uses or causes or permits another to a vehicle or a trailer on the road when the weight, position or distribution of the load that the use of the vehicle or trailer would be dangerous. There is a joint responsibility between drivers and the operators of vehicles and both should make themselves familiar with the good practice set out in the DVSA publication. The on-line version of the guide includes short videos which can be used as training material for staff.
